My Thoughts About Life, Yoga, and Healing

Here I will share things I have learned that have helped me along the path of life. I discovered that most of us have forgotten the tremendous resource we can be to ourselves. Always we look outside, ignoring our own capacity to heal and change what is damaging to ourselves. Sometimes outside help is good, but it works best when your inner guidance is calling for that extra assistance.

Sunshine Meditation

Even during the frigid days of winter, we have bright sunny days. On those days, find a sunny spot on the floor (or a chair only if you have physical limitations to getting on the floor). Take as much time as you need to get comfortable sitting - this could mean sitting on a block or cushion, putting pillows under your knees, moving your legs to a position that doesn't cause pain, etc. Now, move your torso forward and backwards and around, loosening up your spine a bit. Let your head tip slowly side to side to loosen up your neck. Do whatever other stretching your body needs in order to be able to sit quietly for a few moments.

Now, close your eyes and lift your face up toward the sun. Focus on your breath and begin to feel the light of the sun entering into your body. You will naturally experience a glow that filters through your eyelids. Now feel this glow of sunlight filtering into your whole body. Imagine that it is going to the dark corners of your inner body, lighting up the darkness and renewing what is hurt, damaged, stuck or lost. Breathe in the light of forgiveness and love. Begin to sense areas within you that are hard or tense. Breathe into any tight sensations until the light begins to soften those areas. Just keep watching the light and let it do its magic, cleansing and purifying your being, washing clean any harmful thoughts, memories, or hurts in your body and mind.

Let this be your own version and exploration of a sunshine meditation. There is no "right" way to do it. In this meditation it is almost impossible not to feel the connection between your mind and body. Stay as long as you can and enjoy the peace that washes over you. Practice this meditation every sunny day of your life. You will then be able to create this feeling even on days when the sun is not shinning.
